Music Industry in Crisis

Music Collection
20th Century record companies made money by selling a tangible product like a vinyl disk or a CD. You would own music by having a disc collection in your house. It would be like something that is collectable and priceless.

Changing Technology
Internet and the music industry had to adapt as CD sales were falling each year. Many music stores e.g. HMV, Blockbuster have closed down. By those music stores closing down money stops coming in for the artist but things like concerts and tours are other ways of an artist making their money. As well as merchandise. Music product is now bought online as a single song or album, and exists only as on item on an iPod, mobile phone or computer. In 2009 95% of music was downloaded online and done illegally. People may download music instead of buying them because it is free even though it is illegal.

The music industry claimed a victory in 2009 when four men behind a file-sharing site (Private Boy) were sentenced to a year in year and ordered to pay a £2.5m in damaged for helping internet users download music, films and computer games without paying or them. However this action may have been to stop downloading but people will still try and find a place to download music for free illegally.

Chief Executive Simon Fox said the 'within three years technology would become its single biggest product category ahead of both CDs and DVDs. About 25% of the floor space to MP3 players, tablet computers and headphones as the CD goes the way of other defunct formats such as vinyl and tapes. The headphone market is worth £150m with Dr Dre's Beats selling for more than £00m. Now £1billion after being bought by Apple.

History of Music Videos

Thursday 11.08.14

Advances in technology turned music videos in what it is today. Music videos have been around since 1920. A Jazz musician such as Bessie Smith who sung St Louis Blues, made short films to accompany popular songs.

1965: Bob Dylan Film: Subterranean Homesick Blues was created as one of the first modern music video which was a form of lyric videos like we have in modern days on YouTube where people can upload anything so that people all over the world can watch them.

Pop music TV shows in 1970: the record industry discovers TV shows which are a great opportunity to promote their artists. They focus on producing short 'promos' early music videos started to replace the live performance of the artist on the TV stage. However some videos do not have artists in it but other people and things which could be considered as a new genre that is coming out.

Bohemian Rhapsody 1975: ground breaking video released by Queen. At the beginning of the video the era is set. The video was one of the first to use advanced visual effects which was exciting in 1975. At that time the video would have been controversial like today Blurred Lines is controversial with the type of video they shot.

Brief

Monday
Advanced Portfolio 08.08.14

This week we were introduced to the Media Studies course for A2. We were told that we need a media portfolio, comprising a main and ancillary text including research, planning and evaluation in digital format(s).

For this year of Media Studies I will need to create a promotion package for the release of an album and I will need to include a music promo video . I also need to create a digipak for the album's release and a magazine advertisement for the digipak.

I need to evaluate and reflect on the creative process and my experience of making the promotion package. I have four questions to evaluate regarding my research evidence, planning evidence and construction evidence.

We were told that we could work on our own or work in a group not more than 4.
